China okays D-limonene as crop pest control for the first time

The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture recently released a list of pesticide products that will be granted registration, of which, ORO AGRI International Limited will receive a temporary registration of its 92% D-limonene technical and 5% D-limonene AS, for the control of Bemisia tabaci in tomatoes.

This is the first time China has recognized D-limonene as a substance for crop pest control. Prior to the registration, US Florida Citrus Company had registered 93% D-limonene technical for hygienic insecticide use.

D-limonene is found in various fruits, especially citrus fruits; vegetables; and spice plants, with a concentration of up to 90%--95% w/w in the peels.

The substance has extensive uses. It can be used medically to prevent and cure cancer or for the preparation of perfumes or scents in the food and chemicals industries. It can also be used as an industrial environmentally friendly cleaning agent. The application in pest control is also viable, but the cost of product development is relatively high.
